Espada, Díaz, Javier Visit Astros’ International Signees in Dominican Republic

January 22, 2026

Astros manager Joe Espada traveled to the Dominican Republic last week to welcome the organization’s newest international prospects during their signing ceremony.

Espada was joined by catcher Yainer Díaz and pitcher Cristian Javier, both Dominican natives who developed through the Astros’ academy system, to speak directly with the eight teenage signees. The visit was designed to connect the young players with current big leaguers who followed a similar path to the majors.

Espada emphasized the importance of discipline and consistent work, telling the prospects that advancement through the system can happen quickly for players who take advantage of development opportunities. He noted that reaching the Major Leagues within three to four years of signing is realistic for those who progress steadily.

Díaz and Javier served as firsthand examples of the Astros’ success in the Dominican Republic. Díaz has emerged as Houston’s starting catcher since debuting in 2022, while Javier has been a key member of the rotation since 2020.

Espada said he plans to remain actively involved in tracking the group’s progress, regularly reviewing reports from the Dominican academy staff throughout the season.

The Astros’ 2026 international signing class is headlined by Albert Fermín, a 16-year-old switch-hitting shortstop who signed for $2.1 million as part of the club’s $5.44 million bonus pool. The class includes eight players, the other seven of whom are 17 years old.
