SACRAMENTO, CA – June 16, 2025 – The Houston Astros’ five-game winning streak was snapped last night as the Athletics defeated them 3-1 with a walk-off home run at Sutter Health Park. The loss marked a disappointing start to their new road trip.
Astros starter Ryan Gusto received a no-decision despite a solid outing, allowing just one run on three hits over five innings while striking out eight. The loss went to Astros reliever Bryan Abreu (1-3), who gave up the walk-off shot in the ninth. For the Athletics, Mason Miller (1-2) earned the win in relief.
The Astros got on the board early in the top of the first inning when Jose Altuve launched a solo home run to left field, his 11th of the season, giving Houston a 1-0 lead.
That lead held until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Athletics tied the game. JJ Bleday hit a solo home run to right field off Ryan Gusto, making it 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 through the eighth inning, setting up a tense finish. In the bottom of the ninth, after a walk to Brent Rooker, Nick Kurtz stepped to the plate for the Athletics and hit a two-run walk-off home run to right field off Bryan Abreu, sealing the 3-1 victory for Oakland.
The Astros’ offense managed 8 hits but struggled to capitalize on opportunities after Altuve’s early blast, leaving 5 runners on base.
The loss dropped the Astros’ record to 41-31 and ended their impressive winning streak. They’ll look to bounce back in the second game of the series against the Athletics.
