Jakob Misiorowski was everything advertised. The Houston Astros were not.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ 24-year-old right-hander held Houston to three hits over seven innings Sunday afternoon at Daikin Park, striking out eight without issuing a walk, as the Brewers took the series finale 2-0 and split the three-game set.
Misiorowski, the major-league strikeout leader, did not allow a runner past second base. The Astros went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left four on base. Yordan Alvarez struck out three times. The offense that scored nine runs Saturday was shut out a day later by a pitcher who came in allowing just 1.65 runs per nine innings.
Tatsuya Imai took the loss, falling to 2-3. He allowed two runs on three hits over six innings, walking two and striking out five. The damage came in the fourth, when Andrew Vaughn singled and Jake Bauers followed with a two-run homer to left to give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead Imai and the Astros never overcame.
Imai escaped trouble in the third, when David Hamilton singled, stole second and third, and Joey Ortiz walked, only for Imai to strike out Christian Yelich and get Garrett Mitchell to ground out to end the inning.
Alimber Santa worked a scoreless seventh and eighth. Nate Pearson covered the ninth, allowing a double to Andrew Vaughn before a pinch-runner was caught stealing third. Jake Bauers flew out to end the inning.
The Astros finished with three hits—a Paredes double, a Peña single, and a Meyers single—and never advanced a runner beyond second base.
The Astros open a three-game home series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday at Daikin Park.
