Astros Return Home to Face Orioles
The Astros open a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, returning from the All-Star break for their first home series since trading Lance McCullers Jr. to Milwaukee. Both clubs enter the weekend at almost identical marks, Houston at 47-51 and Baltimore at 46-51, a matchup less about playoff positioning than about which team can find its footing first with two and a half months left to play.
Friday’s opener is set for 7:10 p.m. Central at Daikin Park, with Peter Lambert on the mound for Houston against Baltimore’s Dean Kremer. Lambert enters the second half as the unlikely anchor of Houston’s rotation, a pitcher who was released and re-signed by the organization in the same week back in March and has since turned into its most consistent arm. Saturday shifts to a 3:10 p.m. Central start, with Spencer Arrighetti opposing Trevor Rogers. The series closes Sunday at 1:10 p.m. Central, Hunter Brown starting for Houston against an Orioles starter still to be named.
While Baltimore arrives simply looking to build on recent form, Houston’s week looked different: the front office spent it reshaping the pitching staff, sending McCullers to Milwaukee and welcoming word that Ronel Blanco and Hayden Wesneski are both nearing returns from long-term injury. The roster taking the field this weekend is not quite the one that went into the break, and how it performs could influence Houston’s approach as the Aug. 3 trade deadline draws closer.
Yordan Alvarez, coming off his All-Star Game start in Philadelphia, remains the centerpiece of Houston’s offense and continues to build a Triple Crown case heading into the second half. Friday’s game also doubles as a promotional night, with a Jeremy Peña jersey giveaway and postgame fireworks drawing what should be one of the larger home crowds of the week.
For Houston, the weekend offers an early opportunity to establish momentum before the trade deadline and a pivotal stretch of the second half. All three games will air locally on Space City Home Network.
