Astros Opening Day 2026: What to Know Before March 26 vs. Angels at Daikin Park

March 19, 2026

One week from today, baseball returns to Houston. The Astros open the 2026 season Thursday, March 26, against the Los Angeles Angels at Daikin Park, with first pitch scheduled for 3:10 p.m. CT. Here’s what you need to know before heading downtown.

Get There Early—and Plan Ahead for Parking

This is not a typical Opening Day. The NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds will be held at Toyota Center the same day, just 0.8 miles from Daikin Park. Expect heavy traffic throughout downtown Houston and a shortage of affordable parking. Last season, lots near the ballpark reached as high as $80 on high-demand days, and this one could be worse.

The smart move: Park in garages east of the ballpark or in East Downtown (EaDo) and walk in. With sunny weather in the forecast, it’s a manageable walk and a way to avoid the worst congestion.

Opening Day Street Fest

The Astros will host the Opening Day Street Fest, presented by Budweiser, in the blocks surrounding Daikin Park from noon to 3:00 p.m. The event includes live music, face painters, caricature artists, photo booths, inflatables, yard games, food trucks, and giveaways. A game ticket is required for entry.

With a projected high of 87 degrees, it should be a great afternoon for the festivities—just remember to stay hydrated.

The Pitching Matchup

Hunter Brown makes his first career Opening Day start, taking over a role previously held by Framber Valdez for four consecutive seasons before Valdez signed with the Detroit Tigers in February. Brown finished third in AL Cy Young voting last season and enters 2026 as the staff ace.

He’ll face Angels right-hander Jose Soriano, who is also making his first Opening Day start.

In the bullpen, Bryan Abreu steps into the closer role with Josh Hader beginning the season on the injured list due to biceps tendinitis. Abreu has been one of the most reliable relievers in baseball and is well positioned to handle the ninth inning.

The Lineup

Jeremy Peña has not been ruled out for Opening Day as he continues to recover from a fractured fingertip suffered during a World Baseball Classic exhibition game earlier this month. The Astros’ All-Star shortstop has progressed to throwing and is planning to swing a bat this weekend. Should Peña need additional time, Carlos Correa would shift back to shortstop and Isaac Paredes would move to third base.

Our Projected Astros Lineup

  1. Jose Altuve 2B
  2. Isaac Paredes 3B
  3. Yordan Alvarez DH
  4. Carlos Correa SS
  5. Christian Walker 1B
  6. Yainer Diaz C
  7. Joey Loperfido LF
  8. Cam Smith RF
  9. Jake Meyers CF

Alvarez is healthy and has looked sharp this spring. How quickly Altuve and Walker settle in could shape the early tone of the season.

The Bottom Line

The 2026 Astros enter the season with both strengths and questions. The rotation looks deeper than it did in November, and the bullpen has the pieces to compete. The offense will need to prove it can carry its share. Opening Day against the Angels is the first step.
