Comments Off on Astros Fall to Marlins 7-4 After Seventh-Inning Grand Slam

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Astros had it lined up. Then one swing erased it.

Dillon Lewis crushed a seventh-inning grand slam off Logan VanWey, flipping a Houston lead into a 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches.

Miami struck first with a three-run second. Kyle Stowers doubled to start the rally, Liam Hicks followed with a single, and Nathan Martorella added another hit before Juan Matheus drove in the third run with a groundout.

Houston chipped away in the third. César Salazar doubled and scored on a Jose Altuve RBI single, and Joey Loperfido added a run with a groundout to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Astros briefly took control in the sixth. Shay Whitcomb and Chase Call reached ahead of a Carlos Pérez single that brought both home, giving Houston a 4-3 lead.

It didn’t last. VanWey opened the seventh with a walk to Carter Johnson, hit Fenwick Trimble, and allowed a single to Eric Rataczak to load the bases. Lewis did the rest, driving a grand slam to left that put Miami ahead for good.

Hunter Brown started and worked four innings, allowing three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out six. Enyel De Los Santos and Christian Roa were both sharp in relief, each tossing a scoreless inning. Roa struck out one; De Los Santos walked one but kept Miami off the board. Roa struck out one; De Los Santos walked one but kept Miami off the board. Taylor Trammell and Brice Matthews each saw late-game action, with Trammell singling in the ninth.

The Astros showed enough offensively to stay in it. The margin, again, was in the bullpen.
