ARLINGTON, Texas — September 7, 2025 — The Texas Rangers, fueled by a key sixth-inning surge, secured a crucial victory over the division-leading Houston Astros with a final score of 4-2. The win, a masterful display of timely hitting and a resilient bullpen, concluded the weekend series at Globe Life Field and kept the Rangers firmly in the hunt for a postseason berth.
The game began as a classic pitchers’ duel between the Astros’ Framber Valdez and the Rangers’ Patrick Corbin. Corbin was particularly dominant early on, keeping the Astros’ offense in check and holding them hitless through the first four innings. The Rangers scratched across the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning when Dylan Moore scored on a throwing error by the Astros’ catcher, putting Texas up 1-0.
The pitchers continued to trade blows until the top of the sixth. The Astros finally broke through against Corbin, as Mauricio Dubón led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Jeremy Peña, tying the game at 1-1 and knocking Corbin out of the game.
However, the Rangers immediately responded in the bottom of the frame, turning the momentum decisively in their favor. With two outs and a runner on first, Josh Jung laced a line drive into the left-center field gap for a go-ahead RBI double. Just three pitches later, Jake Burger crushed a two-run home run to right-center field, a powerful shot that pushed the Rangers’ lead to a commanding 4-1.
The Astros mounted a final push in the top of the seventh, scoring one more run on an RBI groundout, but the Rangers’ bullpen proved to be impenetrable from that point forward. Relievers Phil Maton and Shawn Armstrong combined to shut down Houston’s lineup, with Armstrong earning the save after retiring the last four batters he faced.
The Astros’ record now stands at 78-66, while the Seattle Mariners are at 76-69, giving Houston a 2.5-game lead in the American League West. Houston’s next game is a road game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET. The loss to the Rangers ends Houston’s series in Arlington, and they’ll now continue their road trip in Toronto for a three-game series. The final matchup of the Silver Boot Series this season will be a three-game series played at Daikin Park in Houston from September 15-17.
