HOUSTON, TX – September 2, 2025 — The Houston Astros’ bid to extend their recent momentum was halted Tuesday night as they fell to the New York Yankees, 7-1, in the opening game of their three-game series. A grand slam from Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham and a pair of home runs from Jazz Chisholm Jr. powered the New York offense, while pitcher Max Fried stifled the Astros lineup throughout the contest.
Fried was in complete control, pitching seven innings of one-run ball while limiting the Astros to just four hits and striking out five. He kept the home team off balance, forcing weak contact and stranding five runners on base. The lone Astros run came in the sixth inning when Yainer Diaz’s forceout brought Carlos Correa home.
On the mound for Houston, starter Framber Valdez struggled with his command. After giving up a two-run homer to Chisholm in the second, Valdez ran into trouble again in the fifth. He loaded the bases before Grisham crushed a grand slam to left field, extending the Yankees’ lead to 6-0 and putting the game out of reach. Valdez finished his night having given up six runs on eight hits.
The loss brings the Astros’ record to 76-63. Despite the defeat, they maintain their lead in the AL West, holding a 3-game advantage over the second-place Seattle Mariners, who stand at 73-66. The Astros will look to regroup and even the series in the second game, with a matchup against the Yankees’ Will Warren on Wednesday night.
