DETROIT, MI — August 29, 2025 — The offensive struggles for the Houston Astros reached a new low on Tuesday night, as they were shut out for the third consecutive game, falling 1-0 to the Detroit Tigers in 10 innings at Comerica Park. The loss marked the first time the Astros have been shut out in three straight games since 1978.
This was a classic pitchers’ duel from the start, a stark contrast to Monday’s 10-0 drubbing. The game’s marquee matchup between Detroit native and Astros’ ace Hunter Brown and Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal lived up to its billing. Both pitchers were absolutely masterful, keeping hitters off-balance and showcasing incredible command.
Brown was brilliant for the Astros, throwing six shutout innings, allowing only three hits and striking out six. The only real threat he faced came in the third, but he worked his way out of it with a crucial double play from first baseman Christian Walker. Skubal was equally impressive for the Tigers, going seven innings, striking out 10, and allowing just four hits. The Astros’ best chance to score came in the fourth when Yainer Diaz was thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay throw from Tigers’ second baseman Gleyber Torres.
The game remained scoreless through nine innings, sending it to extra innings. With Wenceel Pérez as the automatic runner on second, the Tigers quickly put pressure on Astros reliever Kaleb Ort. An intentional walk to Dillon Dingler and a walk to Jahmai Jones loaded the bases for Torres. The veteran second baseman battled and ultimately drew a bases-loaded walk to score Pérez, walking off the game for the Tigers.
The Astros’ offense was once again invisible. They managed just four hits on the night and struck out 11 times. The team’s collective hitting slump has now lasted for over 27 consecutive innings, leaving the club and its fanbase desperate for a hit, let alone a run.
The loss drops the Astros to a 69-57 record and a precarious one-game lead over the Seattle Mariners. They will look to avoid a series sweep tomorrow afternoon as they send left-hander Framber Valdez to the mound against Tigers veteran Charlie Morton. The Astros will need to find a way to break out of their historic offensive funk if they hope to salvage the final game of the series.
