NEW YORK, NY – August 10, 2025 – The Houston Astros bounced back from yesterday’s loss to defeat the New York Yankees 7-1 in the rubber match of their three-game series at Yankee Stadium. The win, which was fueled by an explosive offensive outing and a spectacular performance on the mound, allowed the Astros to split the series and regain some momentum.
The Astros’ offense started early, with Jose Altuve hitting his 21st home run of the season in the first inning. Altuve, who has been a major offensive contributor, has now hit 250 career home runs. The Astros would break the game wide open in the fifth inning, with Cam Smith hitting a two-run double to extend their lead to 4-0. Carlos Correa would later add a solo home run, his 9th of the season, in the ninth to give the Astros an insurmountable 5-1 lead.
But the real story of the game was the performance of Astros starting pitcher Jason Alexander. Alexander delivered a gem, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing only one hit. He struck out three and walked three, keeping the Yankees’ potent lineup completely off balance. The win improved his record to 2-0.
The Astros’ bullpen took over from there, with the Yankees only managing to score a single run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly. The win allowed the Astros to take the series against the rival Yankees and get a much-needed confidence boost. They will now head back to Houston for a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners.
A Look at the Standings
With their win today, the Astros improved their record to 66-52 and maintained their lead in the AL West. The second-place Seattle Mariners also won today, bringing their record to 66-53. This means the Astros hold a razor-thin half-game lead over the Mariners as they head into a pivotal home series against each other.
