Astros Face Outfield Dilemma: Taylor Trammell’s Roster Spot Under Scrutiny Amid Injuries

July 12, 2025

HOUSTON, TX – July 12, 2025 – The Houston Astros are navigating a challenging period marked by significant injuries, particularly in the outfield, which is putting increased scrutiny on recent call-up Taylor Trammell’s performance. As the team pushes toward the All-Star break, decisions loom regarding how to best solidify the roster.

The Astros have been heavily impacted by injuries this season, leading to a reliance on various players to fill key roles. This situation has elevated players like Trammell into prominent positions, especially in center and left field, following the indefinite absence of slugger Yordan Alvarez and the team’s decision to move Jose Altuve back to second base after a brief outfield experiment.

Trammell, acquired from the New York Yankees last November, returned to the majors on June 25th after recovering from a calf strain. He played in the July 11 opening game of the Silver Boot series against the Texas Rangers, starting in center field and going 1-for-3 with a double and a strikeout. Despite hitting a double, his overall performance at the plate since his recall remains a concern. In his games since being recalled, his slash line sits around .160/.276/.360, with just one home run and four RBIs. His career batting line of .167/.270/.360 suggests that a dramatic turnaround might be challenging.

The Astros’ outfield depth remains tested. While top prospect Jacob Melton is currently on the injured list, another recent call-up, Kenedy Corona, has also entered the mix. Corona, a 25-year-old outfielder known for his speed and defense, made his Major League debut on July 7, 2025. He provides another option, though like Trammell, he is still finding his footing at the highest level.

Given that Trammell has exhausted his minor league options, the team faces a significant decision. Should his performance not improve rapidly, the Astros could be compelled to designate him for assignment. This would mean exposing him to waivers, effectively removing him from the 40-man roster. This scenario underscores the pressure on Trammell to perform, as the Astros look to bolster their lineup and continue their pursuit of the AL West title, potentially exploring external trade options as the July 31st deadline approaches.
