Glimmer of Hope: Key Astros Inch Closer to Return from Injured List

July 28, 2025

HOUSTON, TX – July 28, 2025 – After a challenging weekend that saw the Houston Astros swept at home and the Major League Injured List swell to an unprecedented 18 players, there’s a much-needed glimmer of hope emerging from the team’s medical reports. General Manager Dana Brown offered encouraging updates today, suggesting that several pivotal players are nearing their return to the active roster.

Among the most anticipated returns, rookie right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, who has been recovering from a broken thumb, appears to be the closest. Having already made two successful rehab starts, a strong outing in his next appearance could pave the way for his imminent return to bolster the rotation. Fellow right-hander Cristian Javier, diligently working his way back from Tommy John surgery, is also progressing well through his rehab assignments, with an expected return “shortly after” Arrighetti, potentially bringing another significant arm back into the fold.

On the offensive side, the news is equally promising. All-Star shortstop Jeremy Peña, sidelined with a rib fracture, is ramping up his activities, including live batting practice, and is expected back very soon, potentially early next month. Power-hitting slugger Yordan Alvarez, though dealing with a persistent hand fracture, is also increasing his workload, with the team hopeful for a brief rehab stint before his return. Even at less than 100%, Alvarez’s bat would be a massive boost to the lineup.

Additionally, starting pitchers Luis Garcia (Tommy John) and J.P. France (shoulder surgery) continue their positive rehab trajectories and are on track for August returns. While newly added Brandon Walter’s elbow inflammation appears minor, and position players Jacob Melton, Luis Guillorme, and Shawn Dubin are also nearing the end of their rehabs, the potential activation of these core players offers a significant morale boost.

As the Astros navigate a critical stretch of the season, the prospect of reinforcements returning from the IL provides a beacon of optimism, signaling that the cavalry may finally be on its way.
