HOUSTON, TX – July 12, 2025 – The Texas Rangers struck first in the crucial Silver Boot Series opener last night, defeating the Houston Astros 7-3 at Daikin Park. The loss extended the Astros’ season-high losing streak to four games, dampening the excitement surrounding top prospect Brice Matthews’ highly anticipated Major League debut.
The Rangers’ offense jumped on Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. early, setting the tone for the night. Texas plated two runs in the first inning, courtesy of an Evan Carter two-run single with the bases loaded. Adolis García then launched a solo home run in the third, his second straight game with a long ball, pushing the lead to 3-1. Jonah Heim’s two-run double in the same inning further extended the Rangers’ advantage to 5-1, chasing McCullers after just three innings where he allowed five earned runs on six hits.
The Astros showed some life in the bottom of the fourth when Christian Walker singled to open the inning, followed by a two-run home run by catcher Victor Caratini (his 10th of the season) to cut the deficit to 5-3. However, that was as close as Houston would get.
Rangers’ rookie sensation Wyatt Langford delivered a crushing blow in the seventh inning with a two-out, two-run home run, his 15th of the year, pushing the lead back to 7-3. Langford had an outstanding night at the plate, tying a career-high with four hits and adding a stolen base.
Matthews’ Debut: A Learning Experience
All eyes were on Brice Matthews, the Astros’ top prospect, as he made his Major League debut batting eighth and playing second base. It was a challenging welcome to the big leagues for the Atascocita product. Matthews went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, fanning in his first three at-bats before finally putting a ball in play in the ninth inning, a hard-hit fly ball to left field that was caught by none other than Wyatt Langford at the wall.
“I just want him to build from that last at-bat,” manager Joe Espada said after the game. “He hit that ball hard. You could take a lot of positives from today. No. 1, I thought he handled himself really well, had confidence and he was asking the right questions in between at-bats, and also seeing how they’re going to attack (him). There was a lot to learn from that first game.”
Matthews himself acknowledged the whirlwind of emotions. “It was a lot of fun, just awesome atmosphere. Coming to these games as a kid, so to be on the other side of it and be able to play, it was a great feeling. We didn’t get the job done today, but I’ll cherish this moment forever.”
