PHOENIX, AZ – July 22, 2025 – The Houston Astros opened their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night with a convincing 6-3 victory, thanks in large part to a breakout performance from rookie second baseman Brice Matthews, who launched his first two career big-league home runs.

Matthews, the Astros’ 2023 first-round draft pick, wasted no time making an impact. After the Diamondbacks took an early 1-0 lead, Matthews blasted a three-run shot in the second inning, flipping the score to 3-1 in Houston’s favor. He wasn’t done, adding a crucial two-run homer in the seventh inning to extend the Astros’ lead to 6-3. The 23-year-old finished the night with a career-high five RBIs, showcasing the power potential that made him a top prospect.

Christian Walker also contributed significantly in his return to Chase Field, hitting an RBI double against his former team.

On the mound, Astros left-hander Colton Gordon (4-2) earned the win, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs (two earned). The bullpen held strong, with Josh Hader closing out the ninth inning for his 26th save in 27 chances, despite allowing the tying run to come to the plate before sealing the victory.

The Diamondbacks, who had a four-game winning streak snapped, got a home run from Eugenio Suarez, his NL-leading 36th of the season. Arizona starter Zac Gallen (7-11) took the loss, giving up six runs over six innings.

With this win, the Houston Astros’ record improves to 58-42. They now hold a 1-0 lead in the three-game series against the Diamondbacks.
