Mariners Walk-Off Astros in 11th, Hand Houston Another Crushing Loss

July 20, 2025

SEATTLE, WA – July 20, 2025 – The Houston Astros suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 walk-off loss in 11 innings to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night at T-Mobile Park, dropping the first two games of this crucial divisional series. The defeat pushes the Astros’ recent losing streak to three games and marks their seventh loss in the last eight contests.

Houston sent Lance McCullers Jr. (2-5) to the mound against Logan Evans (4-3) for the Mariners. The game was a seesaw battle from the outset. Seattle jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after three innings, but the Astros rallied in the sixth. After Mariners reliever Carlos Vargas struggled with control, hitting two batters, Jose Altuve, Victor Caratini, and Christian Walker all delivered RBI singles to give the Astros a 5-4 lead.

The Mariners clawed back to tie the game in the eighth inning on a wild pitch from Astros reliever Bryan Abreu, allowing Randy Arozarena to score easily from third and force extra innings.

Both teams traded runs in the 10th inning. The Astros managed to push across a run to take a 6-5 lead, but the Mariners responded in the bottom half. In the 11th, after the Mariners executed a key sacrifice bunt to advance a runner to third, rookie second baseman Cole Young hit a walk-off single against Hector Neris (3-3), sealing the 7-6 victory for Seattle.

The Astros offense collected 12 hits, but struggled to deliver the decisive blow, leaving 15 runners on base. A bright spot was the continued strong hitting from Christian Walker, who had multiple RBIs. However, the bullpen, which has been a strength, faltered late in the game.

To add to the Astros’ woes, third baseman Isaac Paredes was removed from the game in the third inning due to an apparent right hamstring injury and will reportedly fly back to Houston to undergo an MRI. His status is currently unknown, adding another name to the team’s growing injury list.

With this loss, the Astros’ record falls to 56-42, while the Mariners improve to 53-45. The gap between the two teams in the AL West has now shrunk to just 3 games, making today’s series finale an absolute must-win for Houston to avoid a sweep.
