Chas McCormick Continues Rehab From Oblique Strain, Nearing Return to Astros

July 17, 2025

HOUSTON, TX – July 17, 2025 – Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick continues his rehabilitation from a left oblique strain, an injury that has kept him sidelined since late May. While he’s making significant strides in his recovery, a definitive timeline for his return to the major league roster has yet to be set.

McCormick was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 31, retroactive to May 30, after sustaining the oblique strain. After a period of rest and light activity, he began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land on July 4. More recently, he was transferred to the Florida Complex League (FCL) Astros, where he’s been testing his swing in game action. Reports from July 16 indicate McCormick is showing promising signs, including hitting multiple home runs during his FCL stint.

Despite the positive progress in his rehab, McCormick is still working his way back to full game readiness. Manager Joe Espada has emphasized that McCormick would need a thorough rehab assignment before activation, and the club remains cautious to avoid any setbacks.

Prior to his injury, McCormick’s 2025 season had been a mixed bag, as he was hitting .256 with no home runs in 36 games. His return would add depth to the Astros’ outfield, though his role upon activation remains to be seen given the performances of other outfielders during his absence and the impending return of other injured players.

The Astros will continue to monitor McCormick’s progress closely as he aims to rejoin the team and contribute in the second half of the season.
