Astros Drop Series Opener to Guardians 7-5 as Colton Gordon Exits After Line Drive

July 7, 2025

HOUSTON, TX – July 7, 2025 – The Houston Astros returned home following their impressive sweep of the Dodgers, but their momentum was stalled by the Cleveland Guardians, who snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory at Daikin Park. The game was marked by a concerning moment when Astros rookie pitcher Colton Gordon was struck in the head by a line drive.

Cleveland’s Matt Festa (2-2) earned the win in relief, and Emmanuel Clase (19th save) closed it out for the Guardians. Astros starter Colton Gordon (3-2) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a performance that ended with a scary incident.

The Guardians opened the scoring in the fifth inning. After a single by Steven Kwan deflected off Gordon’s head, scoring Will Wilson, José Ramírez then hit a three-run home run off Gordon, giving Cleveland a 4-0 lead. Gordon was evaluated for a concussion after the play but remarkably stayed in the game for two more batters before being pulled.

The Astros responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Taylor Trammell blasted a three-run home run, his first with the Astros and his first overall since May 2023, cutting the deficit. Victor Caratini then added an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.

However, the Guardians quickly reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Brayan Rocchio hit a two-run double off reliever Steven Okert, putting Cleveland up 6-4. They added another run in the ninth on a solo homer from David Fry to make it 7-5.

Despite Victor Caratini’s solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the Astros within one, Houston’s offense couldn’t push across any more runs, stranding runners and squandering opportunities. Rookie outfielder Kenedy Corona also made his MLB debut for the Astros, drawing a walk in his first plate appearance.

The loss brings the Houston Astros’ record to 55 wins and 36 losses (55-36). They will look to bounce back against the Guardians tomorrow night.
