Astros Call Up Miguel Ullola for Major League Debut
The Houston Astros are calling up right-handed pitching prospect Miguel Ullola from Triple-A Sugar Land ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Tigers, with the 24-year-old set to make his major-league debut.
Ullola, already on the 40-man roster, was ranked the No. 11 prospect in the Astros’ system by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline entering this season. Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2021, he spent most of his minor league career as a starter before shifting to a relief role at Sugar Land last month.
The move is a calculated one. Ullola has held minor league hitters to a .190 batting average and averages 12 strikeouts per nine innings, but has also struggled with command, walking 6.2 batters per nine over nearly 479 minor league innings. The hope is that shorter outings will help him stay in the zone more consistently. In 10 relief appearances for Sugar Land, he posted a 2.70 ERA with 16 strikeouts and six walks.
The Astros’ bullpen has been heavily taxed over the past week, making Ullola’s arrival well timed.
