Yordan Advances! Altuve, Peña Eliminated from All-Star Voting
The Phase 1 All-Star results are in, and Yordan Alvarez is headed to Phase 2—but Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña did not make the cut.
Alvarez finished second overall in the American League with 2,911,655 votes, trailing only Toronto’s Ernie Clement, who earned an automatic starting spot as the AL’s top vote-getter with 3,232,932 votes. Alvarez and George Springer advanced as the top two finishers at designated hitter. Alvarez will face George Springer in Phase 2 voting for the AL designated hitter starting spot, which opens Monday, June 29 at noon ET.
Altuve fell short of the top two at second base, where Clement’s automatic berth left only one spot available. That spot went to Texas Rangers second baseman Ezequiel Duran. Peña finished fourth among AL shortstops, behind Bobby Witt Jr. and Andrés Giménez, and will not advance.
Alvarez has made a compelling case for the starting spot. He enters Phase 2 with a .322/.435/.634 slash line, leads the AL in home runs with 25, and is tied for second in the AL with 56 RBIs, putting him in legitimate Triple Crown contention.
Phase 2 voting runs through noon ET on Thursday, July 2, with fans allowed one vote per day. The starters will be announced July 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX. The All-Star Game is July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
