CLEVELAND, OH – June 8, 2025 – The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Houston Astros 4-2 last night at Progressive Field, preventing a three-game sweep and taking the final game of their series. The Astros’ offense was quiet for most of the game, and a late defensive miscue proved costly.
Astros right-hander Brandon Walter (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs over six innings while striking out five. For the Guardians, Cade Smith (2-2) earned the win in relief, and Emmanuel Clase (14th save) closed out the game. Starter Tanner Bibee pitched well, allowing two runs over 6.1 innings for Cleveland.
The Guardians opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Bo Naylor launched a two-run home run to right-center field, giving Cleveland a 2-0 lead.
The game remained tight until the top of the seventh. The Astros finally broke through against Bibee, as Cam Smith hit a two-run double to left field, scoring Yainer Díaz and Jake Meyers, tying the game at 2-2.
However, the tie was short-lived. In the bottom of the seventh, Nolan Jones scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Astros reliever Steven Okert, after a sacrifice bunt by Will Wilson. Steven Kwan then followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing home another run and extending the Guardians’ lead to 4-2.
The Astros offense managed only seven hits and were unable to mount a rally in the final innings against the Guardians’ bullpen. Jake Meyers had a strong game at the plate for Houston, going 4-for-4, but it wasn’t enough.
The loss brought the Astros’ record to 36-29 as they concluded their road trip. Despite the loss, they took the series 2-1 from the Guardians.
