The Houston Astros added another name to their injured list Tuesday, placing infielder Braden Shewmake on the 10-day IL with a right adductor strain ahead of the series opener against Pittsburgh. Zach Cole was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to fill the roster spot.
Shewmake hurt himself on a swing in Saturday’s game against Milwaukee. In 28 games this season, he has hit .243/.260/.405 and filled in at shortstop, second base, and third base.
Manager Joe Espada said Shewmake was feeling better Tuesday but offered no timeline for his return.
“These groins can be tricky, so we’ll see how quickly he recovers from it,” Espada said.
With Shewmake sidelined and Jose Altuve still working back from a left oblique strain, Nick Allen and Brice Matthews are expected to handle second base duties in the interim.
Cole, who was optioned to Sugar Land on May 26, was eligible to return within 10 days under the rules governing replacements for injured players. In 18 games with Houston this season, he has hit .157/.189/.353.
