HOUSTON, TX – May 27, 2025 – The Houston Astros opened their three-game home series against the Oakland Athletics with a resounding 11-1 victory last night at Daikin Park. The offense exploded for a season-high in runs, highlighted by a multi-homer performance from Jose Altuve, while Hunter Brown delivered a strong outing on the mound.
Astros right-hander Hunter Brown (7-3) earned the win, tying for the MLB lead in victories after pitching six dominant innings, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out eight. For the Athletics, starter JP Sears (4-5) took a rough loss, surrendering nine runs on ten hits in just 3.1 innings.
The Astros offense took control early. In the bottom of the second inning, Chas McCormick hit an RBI double, followed by an RBI double from Mauricio Dubón. Jeremy Peña then capped the four-run inning with a two-run home run to left field, his seventh of the season, making it 4-0.
The offensive onslaught continued in the third. Jose Altuve launched a solo home run to left-center field, his seventh of the season. Later in the inning, Cam Smith hit a two-run double, pushing the lead to 7-0.
The Athletics finally got on the board in the top of the fourth when Lawrence Butler hit a solo home run off Hunter Brown. However, the Astros immediately countered in the bottom of the fourth with Jose Altuve hitting his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to right field, his eighth of the season, extending the lead to 9-1.
The Astros weren’t done, adding two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Christian Walker blasted a two-run home run to left field, his seventh of the season, making the final score 11-1.
The Astros collected 13 hits in total, with Jose Altuve leading the way with a phenomenal 4-for-4 performance, including two home runs and three RBIs. Jeremy Peña and Christian Walker also contributed long balls. The Astros’ bullpen effectively shut down the Athletics for the remainder of the game.
The commanding win improved the Astros’ record to 29-25. They’ll look to continue their strong play in the next game of the series.
