HOUSTON, TX – May 24, 2025 – The Houston Astros secured a tight 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night at Daikin Park, propelled by strong pitching from Framber Valdez and an early two-run rally. The win gives the Astros a 2-1 lead in their four-game home series.
Astros left-hander Framber Valdez (4-4) earned the win, delivering six solid innings and allowing just one run on four hits and four walks while striking out five. The bullpen, including José Sousa, Bryan Abreu, and Josh Hader (13th save), held the Mariners scoreless the rest of the way. For the Mariners, Bryan Woo (5-2) took the loss, despite a good outing where he gave up two unearned runs on ten hits over six innings.
The Astros got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on Mariners’ miscues. Jose Altuve scored on a throwing error by Mariners starter Bryan Woo, and Christian Walker then scored on a fielding error by second baseman Leo Rivas, putting Houston up 2-0. These would prove to be the only runs the Astros scored.
The Mariners got their only run in the top of the second. Randy Arozarena hit a triple and later scored on an RBI groundout by Mitch Garver, cutting the Astros’ lead to 2-1.
From that point on, it was a pitching and defensive battle. Valdez navigated through some traffic but largely shut down the Mariners offense, allowing only one runner to get past second base after the second inning. The Astros bullpen then took over, with Hader closing it out in the ninth for his 13th save.
The Astros offense collected 11 hits, all singles, but struggled with runners in scoring position, going just 1-for-8. However, the early unearned runs and superb pitching were enough.
The win improved the Astros’ record to 27-25. They now have a chance to win the series outright in the final game.
