HOUSTON, TX – May 23, 2025 – The Seattle Mariners defeated the Houston Astros 5-3 last night at Daikin Park, overcoming an early deficit with a crucial seventh-inning rally to even their four-game series at one game apiece.
Astros right-hander Ryan Gusto started and allowed two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings, striking out six. The loss went to Bryan Abreu (1-2), who surrendered the decisive runs in the seventh. For the Mariners, Emerson Hancock (2-2) earned the win, pitching six innings and giving up three runs on nine hits. Andrés Muñoz (17th save) closed out the game.
The Mariners got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning when Leody Taveras hit a solo home run.
The Astros responded swiftly in the bottom of the third. Isaac Paredes hit a two-run home run to left field, his 11th of the season, scoring Jeremy Peña and giving Houston a 2-1 lead.
Seattle tied the game in the top of the fifth with a solo home run from Miles Mastrobuoni. However, the Astros immediately regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Christian Walker hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Isaac Paredes and making it 3-2.
The decisive blow came in the top of the seventh inning. With runners on base, Julio Rodríguez hit an RBI double to right field, scoring J.P. Crawford and tying the game at 3-3. Immediately after, Cal Raleigh launched a go-ahead two-run home run to right field, his 17th of the season, putting the Mariners up 5-3.
The Astros offense collected 11 hits but struggled to get key hits, stranding 10 runners on base. They were unable to score after the fifth inning.
The loss dropped the Astros’ record to 26-25. The series is now tied 1-1, with two more games remaining.
