HOUSTON, TX – May 22, 2025 – The Houston Astros returned home and unleashed an offensive onslaught, defeating the Seattle Mariners 9-2 last night at Daikin Park in the opener of their four-game series. A strong performance from the lineup, including a multi-homer game, backed up solid pitching.

Astros right-hander Shawn Dubin (1-0) earned the win in relief, after starter Lance McCullers Jr. pitched 4.1 innings allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits. For the Mariners, starter George Kirby (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings.

The Mariners actually jumped out to an early lead. In the top of the first, J.P. Crawford hit an RBI single. They added another run in the second when Dylan Moore hit a solo home run, giving Seattle a 2-0 advantage.

However, the Astros offense quickly found its rhythm. In the bottom of the third, Jeremy Peña hit an RBI triple, scoring Cam Smith. Jose Altuve followed with an RBI single, tying the game at 2-2.

The Astros took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Isaac Paredes hit an RBI sacrifice fly, Victor Caratini added an RBI single, and Mauricio Dubón hit an RBI double, extending Houston’s lead to 5-2.

The Astros continued to pile on runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Jose Altuve launched a solo home run in the fifth, his fifth of the season. He wasn’t done, as in the sixth, he hit a two-run homer, his sixth of the year, bringing his RBI total to four for the night and pushing the score to 9-2. Yainer Díaz also contributed an RBI double in the sixth.

The Astros bats collected 13 hits in total, with Jose Altuve (2 HR, 4 RBI) leading the charge. The bullpen held the Mariners scoreless after the second inning.

The decisive victory improved the Astros’ record to 26-24, as they look to build momentum in this important home series.
