May 17, 2025

ARLINGTON, TX – May 17, 2025 – The Texas Rangers defeated the Houston Astros 5-1 last night at Globe Life Field, taking a 2-1 lead in their four-game series. The Rangers offense came alive with key home runs, while Astros hitters struggled to find their rhythm against Texas pitching.

Astros right-hander Ronel Blanco (3-4) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over six innings, including a pivotal two-run homer. For the Rangers, Tyler Mahle (5-1) was excellent, earning the win by giving up just one run on five hits over six innings, striking out three.

The Astros actually got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Christian Walker hit an RBI double to center field, scoring Isaac Paredes and giving Houston an early 1-0 lead.

However, that would be the only run for the Astros. The Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the third when Wyatt Langford hit an RBI infield single to shortstop, scoring Kyle Higashioka.

The Rangers took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With Marcus Semien on first, Joc Pederson crushed a two-run home run to right field, his second of the season, putting Texas up 3-1.

Texas added insurance runs in the seventh inning. Josh Smith hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Sam Haggerty, and then Wyatt Langford hit a solo home run, his ninth of the season, extending the Rangers’ lead to 5-1.

The Astros’ offense managed only five hits and was unable to mount any significant threats after the first inning. Ronel Blanco pitched a decent game overall but was hurt by the two home runs.

The loss dropped the Astros’ record to 23-22, ensuring they cannot win the series but will play for a split in the final game.
