ARLINGTON, TX – May 16, 2025 – The Houston Astros secured a remarkable 6-3 comeback victory over the Texas Rangers last night at Globe Life Field, fueled by a massive six-run seventh inning. The win evened their four-game series at one game apiece.
Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr., making his third start back from injury, pitched four innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and a walk. He did not factor into the decision. The Astros bullpen was excellent, with Kaleb Ort (1-0) earning the win in relief after a scoreless inning. Josh Hader recorded his 11th save, despite giving up a solo homer in the ninth. For the Rangers, Nathan Eovaldi pitched well through 5 2/3 innings, but reliever Shawn Armstrong (1-1) took the loss after being battered in the seventh.
The Rangers took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Jonah Heim singled to right field, driving in two runs which were unearned due to an earlier error, putting Texas up 2-0.
The game remained 2-0 in favor of the Rangers until the top of the seventh inning, when the Astros’ offense finally ignited. It started with Cam Smith hitting an RBI double, scoring Jake Meyers and cutting the lead to 2-1. The Astros then loaded the bases, and Isaac Paredes delivered a clutch two-run single, scoring Cam Smith and Jeremy Peña, giving the Astros their first lead of the game at 3-2.
The rally wasn’t over. After a pitching change, Christian Walker blasted a three-run home run to left-center field, his fifth of the season, scoring Jose Altuve and Isaac Paredes. This 410-foot shot capped off a six-run inning for the Astros, giving them a commanding 6-2 lead.
The Rangers managed to pull one run back in the bottom of the ninth when Josh Jung hit a solo home run off Josh Hader, but it was too little, too late.
The Astros tallied 9 hits in the game, with Christian Walker (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) and Isaac Paredes (1-for-4, 2 RBI) leading the charge offensively. The decisive seven-run outburst broke a six-game winning streak for the Rangers.
The win improved the Astros’ record to 23-21, as they look to build momentum in the long series against their rivals.
