7 Things to Do for Astros Opening Weekend

March 25, 2026

Opening Weekend at Daikin Park is almost here, and the energy around the Astros is building. With big crowds expected and a lot happening around the ballpark, a little preparation can make all the difference. Here are seven things to do before the Astros take the field.

1. Skip the Lines With Go-Ahead Entry

Go-Ahead Entry is MLB’s hands-free entry system that lets you walk into Daikin Park without pulling out your ticket. To use it, download the MLB Ballpark app, make sure your tickets are loaded, and complete a one-time selfie enrollment. Once you’re set up, head to a designated Go-Ahead lane—available at Home Plate, South Home Plate, and Left Field, with Go-Ahead-only entry at Center Field and Right Field. You can check your Daikin Park gate guide ahead of time to pick the best entrance for your seat.

For the smoothest experience, set it up before you arrive, make sure your full group is with you or has their own tickets, and keep your face visible as you enter. Gates open two hours before first pitch.

2. Check the Bag Policy Before You Go

Daikin Park keeps it simple: If your bag is larger than 16” x 16” x 8”, it’s not getting in. Backpacks are not allowed, but exceptions may be made for diaper bags, medical bags, or single-compartment drawstring bags within size limits. Hard-sided and Styrofoam coolers are prohibited, but small soft-sided coolers are allowed if they meet the same requirements. All bags are subject to inspection at the gate.

Fans can also bring in outside food, as long as it fits in a clear, one-gallon-sized bag, along with one factory-sealed clear plastic water bottle (no larger than one liter).

3. Check the 2026 Promotions Schedule

Before you go, take a minute to look at the Astros’ 2026 promotions schedule. Giveaways, theme nights, and special events can completely change your game-day experience. With certain items limited to the first fans through the gates, plan to arrive early if there’s something you can’t live without.

4. Get There Early—and Plan Ahead for Parking

This isn’t a typical Opening Weekend. The NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds will be at nearby Toyota Center, less than a mile from Daikin Park. Expect heavy traffic throughout downtown Houston and a serious crunch for parking.

On high-demand days last season, lots near the ballpark reached up to $80. With both events happening, it could be even higher.

The smart move: Plan ahead and consider parking east of the ballpark or in East Downtown (EaDo) and walking in. It’s a manageable distance and one of the easiest ways to avoid the worst congestion.

5. Be Ready for Cashless Payments

Daikin Park is a fully cashless venue: All purchases inside the stadium require a credit card, debit card, or mobile payment. Cash is not accepted at concessions, retail locations, or parking.

If you only have cash and need to convert it to a prepaid card, reverse ATMs are available on the main concourse, club level, and upper concourse.

6. Plan Your Food Strategy Ahead of Time

Opening Weekend crowds don’t stop at the gates—restaurants around Daikin Park fill up quickly, and popular spots inside the park can draw long lines. Taking a look at both the Astros restaurant guide for nearby options and your Daikin Park concessions guide can help you decide where to eat before you even arrive. If you’re eating inside, having a plan can save time. Less time in line, more time watching the Astros.

7. Get Your Astros Gear On

Opening Weekend is as much about the atmosphere as the game, and Daikin Park will be full of fans decked out in Astros colors. You can shop ahead at MLBShop.com or browse the team store once you’re at the ballpark.

Whether it’s a jersey with your favorite player’s name, a rhinestone cowboy hat, or a pair of Orbit socks, having it ready lets you jump straight into the experience and focus on the game.
