MILWAUKEE, WI – May 5, 2025 – The Houston Astros began their road trip after the White Sox series with a 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers last night at American Family Field on Cinco de Mayo. The Astros’ offense struggled to generate runs, while Christian Yelich provided a key two-run homer for the Brewers.
Astros right-hander Ronel Blanco (2-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings, while striking out six. Brewers starter Tobias Myers (1-0) earned the win, pitching 5 1/3 strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits.
The Brewers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. After Joey Ortiz doubled, William Contreras hit an RBI single. Christian Yelich followed that up with a 413-foot two-run home run to right-center field, extending Milwaukee’s lead to 3-0. Yelich’s homer came in his 1,500th career game.
The Astros managed to get on the board in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Christian Walker reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Jose Altuve to score, cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, the Astros’ rally was quickly snuffed out by Brewers reliever Nick Mears, who struck out Zach Dezenzo and got Jake Meyers to ground out, stranding the bases loaded.
Milwaukee added two insurance runs in the eighth inning off Astros reliever Bennett Sousa. Rhys Hoskins hit an RBI double, and Jake Bauers followed with an RBI single, making it 5-1.
The Astros recorded 9 hits in the game, but left 8 runners on base, struggling to convert opportunities into runs.
This game marked the third straight without slugger Yordan Alvarez, who was officially placed on the injured list today (retroactive to May 3rd) due to right hand inflammation, which would later be diagnosed as a small fracture. His absence was noticeable in the team’s ability to drive in runs.
The loss brought the Astros’ record to 17-17.
