CHICAGO, IL – May 4, 2025 – The Houston Astros suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat to the Chicago White Sox yesterday at Guaranteed Rate Field in a game shortened to seven innings due to rain. The loss meant the White Sox took the three-game series 2-1, snapping the Astros’ chance at a road series win.
The game marked the return of Astros veteran right-hander Lance McCullers Jr., making his first start since the 2022 World Series after missing the entire 2023 and 2024 seasons. McCullers Jr. showed promise, keeping the White Sox scoreless for 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and walking three while striking out four in his return. The loss ultimately fell to reliever Steven Okert (1-1), who allowed two earned runs in one inning. White Sox reliever Mike Vasil (1-1) earned his first career win, holding the Astros hitless in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
The Astros got on the board early in the second inning. Mauricio Dubón hit a two-run single, scoring Zach Dezenzo and Victor Caratini, giving Houston a 2-0 lead.
The lead extended in the fifth inning when Zach Dezenzo launched his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, making it 4-0.
However, the White Sox mounted a comeback. In the bottom of the fifth, they scored three runs, capitalizing on a walk by Josh Rojas that forced in a run, followed by an RBI single from Lenyn Sosa, trimming the deficit to 4-3.
The decisive blow came in the sixth inning. Luis Robert Jr. hit an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. Robert Jr. then stole second and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Edgar Quero.
The game was delayed for 80 minutes by rain before being officially called after the bottom of the sixth inning (with the White Sox having batted in the top of the seventh, as it was the home team).
The Astros finished with 9 hits but left 7 runners on base, unable to capitalize on key opportunities. The loss dropped their record to 17-16 on the season.
