CHICAGO, IL – May 3, 2025 – The Houston Astros returned to form with a commanding 8-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox last night at Guaranteed Rate Field. The extraordinary performance from center fielder Jake Meyers, who drove in a career-high seven runs, fueled the win. However, a significant development for the Astros was the absence of slugger Yordan Alvarez, who was sidelined with right hand inflammation.
Astros starter Hunter Brown (5-1) earned the win, despite a shaky start where he gave up three early runs. He settled down to pitch six innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out nine. For the White Sox, starter Davis Martin took the loss.
The White Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, with Andrew Benintendi and Andrew Vaughn contributing RBIs.
However, the Astros offense, despite falling behind early, began to chip away and then exploded. Jake Meyers, batting in the ninth spot, began his incredible night with a solo home run in the top of the third inning, making it 3-1.
Meyers struck again in the fourth, hitting a two-run triple that tied the game at 3-3.
The Astros then took control in the sixth inning. With two outs and two runners on, Meyers delivered his second home run of the game, a three-run shot, giving the Astros a decisive 6-3 lead.
Houston continued to pile on in the eighth. Zach Dezenzo hit an RBI double, and Meyers capped his career night with an RBI double as well, bringing the score to its final of 8-3.
Meyers finished the game 4-for-4 with two home runs, a triple, a double, and seven RBIs, an astonishing performance. The Astros collected 13 hits in total.
The bullpen, including Bryan King, Bryan Abreu, and Luis VanWey, held the White Sox scoreless for the final three innings.
This victory brought the Astros’ record to 17-15, and they will look to win the rubber match of the series tomorrow, albeit without their star slugger in the lineup.
