WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — After nearly two weeks of watching teammates take the mound, Lance McCullers Jr. is scheduled to make his spring debut Friday when the Astros host the Washington Nationals at CACTI Park.
The 32-year-old right-hander enters camp healthy and following a normal throwing program, but questions remain about his role in a crowded rotation picture. Friday’s outing provides the first real look at where he stands as the final year of his contract approaches.
What to Watch
Command:
Control has been the separating factor in recent seasons. McCullers walked 39 batters in 55.1 innings last year, and when he falls behind in counts, his curveball loses its edge. Early spring outings are about strike-throwing consistency more than results.
Velocity:
McCullers does not need to overpower hitters, but his fastball plays best when it sits in the low-to-mid 90s. A stable velocity band would signal that his arm is responding well after a healthy offseason.
Delivery and Health:
For the first time in several years, McCullers arrived in camp without rehab restrictions. Friday will offer the first in-game look at how that translates into rhythm and repeatable mechanics.
Rotation Context
Houston plans to open the season with a six-man rotation due to a demanding early schedule—26 games in 28 days. Hunter Brown and Tatsuya Imai project near the top of the group, with Cristian Javier in line for a role when fully healthy.
That leaves competition for the remaining spots among McCullers, Mike Burrows, Spencer Arrighetti, Ryan Weiss, and others in camp. The Astros need starters capable of covering innings and keeping games within reach. Establishing that baseline begins now.
Measuring the Outing
Manager Joe Espada has not announced a pitch count, but two to three innings would align with typical early spring progression. The emphasis will be on process: first-pitch strikes, efficiency, and the ability to finish hitters when ahead.
The Nationals are unlikely to field a full regular-season lineup, and no one expects midseason sharpness. Still, the appearance sets an initial benchmark for how McCullers fits into the broader rotation picture.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. CT at CACTI Park.
