Former Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez is headed to the Detroit Tigers, agreeing to a three-year, $115 million contract Wednesday night, pending a physical. The deal carries a record $38.3 million average annual value for a left-handed pitcher and includes deferred money and an opt-out clause after the 2026 season.
An Eight-Year Run in Houston
Valdez, 32, ends an eight-year run in Houston after spending his entire major league career with the Astros. Originally signed for just $10,000 at age 21, the left-hander developed into one of baseball’s most durable and reliable starters. Since 2020, Valdez has thrown 973 innings — the fifth-most in the majors — while making only two trips to the injured list.
He finished the 2025 season with a 3.66 ERA over 192 innings and 187 strikeouts. Though considered by some metrics to be his least dominant campaign, Valdez has maintained strong consistency, posting a 3.20 ERA on average since 2021. His success has been driven by one of the highest ground-ball rates among starting pitchers during that span.
A Key Piece of a Championship Era
Valdez played a key role in Houston’s 2022 championship run, earning the win in Game 6 of the World Series against Philadelphia. He finished that postseason with a 1.44 ERA across four starts and added a career highlight in August 2023 when he threw a no-hitter against Cleveland.
Reunion with A. J. Hinch
The move reunites Valdez with Tigers manager A. J. Hinch, who managed the Astros during the early part of the left-hander’s career. In Detroit, Valdez joins reigning two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal atop a rotation that also includes Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize, giving the Tigers one of the most formidable starting staffs in the American League.
Compensation for Houston
Because Valdez rejected Houston’s $22.025 million qualifying offer, the Astros will receive a compensatory draft pick around the 75th overall selection. He becomes the latest high-profile free agent to depart Houston in recent years, joining George Springer, Carlos Correa, and Alex Bregman among notable names who have moved on in free agency.
