Astros’ Playoff Hopes Fading Fast

September 24, 2025

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA — September 24, 2025 — The Houston Astros suffered a significant setback in their postseason chase, falling 6-0 to the Oakland Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum. The defeat, marking the team’s fifth consecutive loss, has dropped them to 84-74 and pushed them out of a playoff position with just four games remaining in the regular season.

Oakland’s offense dominated the night, starting with a solo home run by catcher Shea Langeliers in the second inning. Langeliers, who had an outstanding night at the plate, extended the A’s lead with an RBI double in the fifth. The Athletics broke the game open in the seventh when Tyler Soderstrom hit a two-run home run off Astros reliever Bryan King, bringing the score to 6-0. The Astros’ offense, in contrast, was shut down all night, managing only three hits and going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Astros starter Hunter Brown (12-9) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits through five innings. The Astros’ bullpen also struggled, as Bryan King gave up a two-run homer in his inning of work.

The Astros will finish their series with the Athletics Thursday at 2:35 p.m. Central and then face the Anaheim Angels Friday for their final series of the regular season.

The Path to the Postseason

The Houston Astros’ fate is no longer entirely in their own hands. Their path to the playoffs requires a specific series of events in the final four games of the regular season.

Current American League Wild Card Standings:

  1. New York Yankees: 90-68
  2. Boston Red Sox: 87-71
  3. Detroit Tigers: 85-73
  4. Houston Astros: 84-74

The Scenarios:

The Astros must win more games than the Detroit Tigers.

  • Astros Win Out (4-0): The Astros would finish with a record of 88-74. They would need the Tigers to go 2-2 or worse in their final four games to finish at 87-75 or worse, allowing the Astros to pass them in the standings.
  • Tiebreaker Scenario: The Tigers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Astros due to winning the season series. This is a critical factor. If both teams finish with the same record, for example, 86-76, the Tigers would advance to the postseason and the Astros would be eliminated without a tiebreaker game.
  • Boston’s Role: While the Astros are primarily chasing the Tigers for the final spot, they are also two games behind the Red Sox. The Astros’ only path forward is to finish with a better record than the team they are chasing.

The Astros’ only option is to win as many of their final games as possible and hope for losses from the Tigers.
