HOUSTON, TEXAS — September 17, 2025 — The Houston Astros completed a series sweep against the Texas Rangers, securing a decisive 5-2 victory at Daikin Park. The win was a critical one for the Astros, as it moved them back into sole possession of first place in the American League West. It also ensured they would retain the coveted Silver Boot for the ninth consecutive season, a trophy awarded to the winner of the season series between the two teams.
The Astros’ offense came alive against Rangers ace Jacob deGrom, who had a difficult night on the mound. Houston’s offense pushed him to throw 35 pitches in the first inning alone. The Astros scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Yainer Diaz.
The Rangers tied the game in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by Josh Jung and an RBI single by Cody Freeman. However, the Astros’ offense quickly responded. In the bottom of the third, Jose Altuve hit a two-run home run off deGrom, giving the Astros a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish. Jeremy Peña added an exclamation point with a solo shot in the fifth inning.
Astros starter Cristian Javier was strong on the mound, allowing only two runs on five hits over six innings to earn the win. The Astros’ bullpen was excellent, with Bryan King pitching a scoreless ninth to secure his second save of the season and seal the victory.
The win puts the Astros at a record of 84-69, a half-game ahead of the Seattle Mariners for the top spot in the AL West. The Rangers, with the loss, fall to 79-74. The Astros will now prepare to face the Mariners in a crucial series that could decide the division title.
